The Finer Cookie:
Chocolate Pretzels
Apology Cookies
By Kimberlie Robert
The new day brings a fresh determination to show that your assumptions were mistaken. You chose the Chocolate Pretzel as the Apology Cookie because 1) they will travel well and 2) the nature of this cookie, with its dense chocolate, crunchy sugar crystals and adorable presentation will hopefully appease any animosity that you’d created, and will demonstrate your enormous regret.
So you set about making the chocolate dough and rolling out the 12 inch ropes that make the pretzel when the doorbell rings for the second time today. Thinking it was the neighbour boy again, you yank the door open with cookie dough fingers. You were wrong again (it must be a streak). The delivery man waited patiently for your signature: another package from Spain. Being no clean space on the counter, you walked it to the dining room table.
A pillow of fresh caraway and buttery fragrance floated through the opened box. You felt the full force of emotion radiate through your body as you picked up the sealed envelope. Finding the one-way plane ticket to Spain threw down the gauntlet of doubt, and left you in a heap of worry. You reached for a shortbread and raised it to your lips. They were chewy from the currents, captivating from the caraway, and not-too-sweet, the way you like them. One-way to Spain?
Your letter must not have arrived. This gesture sweeps away the plaguing uncertainties of long distance love, but stepping on that plane, open-ended, asks too much: work is demanding and your sisters require too much attention. Still, you understand that accepting this invitation, even if only for a short stay matters. And so, you begin to map out the details of such a trip, and feel without any doubt, you can turn this around. Without hesitation, you returned to making your Chocolate Pretzels.
