The Finer Cookie:
Panellete de Pinyon

Secrets not yet revealed

You reluctantly agree to drinks before the movie. The late winter daytime sky is exquisite blue and the light now hints of magenta: all good signs of the much-needed renewal. You splurge on a bottle of gin and vodka. At home, you chill the glasses, make more ice and blend the Elderberry Martini for later. Based on what you saw on the plane, you suspect things aren’t as they seem, but you’re willing to go along for tonight. The doorbell rings (for the third time) and what you find is a demeanour that is sweet and highly mannered. What you didn’t expect was the small six-inch box and a bottle of Spanish Muscat. Inside is a batch of homemade Panellets de Pinyon. You haven’t tasted these succulent and toasty treasures since you toured Catalan. As you stare at the glossy and chewy pine nut cookies, you have to admit (to yourself) that you are charmed.

The subtlety of this gesture has your attention, but what you do next surprises even you, as you check for signs of personal commitment: rings and such. Finding nothing you smile, and reach for the chilled glasses. Little did you realize your cocktail goes perfectly with the hint of lemon infused into these gorgeous cookies. You promised yourself not to dwell on your curiosity of secrets not yet revealed, as you’ve long learned that we don’t ask for what should be offered. Yet, so much has been shared thus far, still you hold back.
