The Finer Cookie:
Sweet Ricotta Peach Cookies
Delayed in Pamplona
By Kimberlie Robert
You sat with swords in your heart, and pen in your hand crafting a letter that wouldn’t betray your passion. Weeks had turned into months since you wrote those tender words in with the Cinnamon Wafers cookies that you sent to General Delivery, Leon, Spain, 24080. Today you wrote: “I haven’t heard from you in weeks. I must assume that you no longer care. Too bad. That’s it. Goodbye. It’s just amazing how time brings a loss, and loving can fail across great distances.” Indulgently, you mailed it and refused to think of it further.
Two days later, you find at your door a special delivery from Spain. The contents were securely packed and still chilly from the frozen blue ice. Inside were the most beautiful Sweet Ricotta Peach Cookies, with a note that read: “I apologize for the silence, but I was delayed in Pamplona for a week, and I find that I’m walking much slower than I anticipated, thus I am behind in my schedule. I was most welcomed in Leon by your delicious words and your loving care package. The Innkeeper was so charmed by the delicacy with which you prepared the Cinnamon Wafers that she baked these Sweet Ricotta Peach Cookies just for you. I sent them urgently, as they are filled with homemade cheese that has been freshly scented with local oranges. I’ve also enclosed this poem that I wrote for you entitled A Care Package. I think of you constantly.”
You carefully unpacked the “peaches” and took a picture. There are moments in life when the emotional stirring of love and longing can bring you to your outright limits. You bittersweetly embraced your bowl of cookies, born of love, and walked yourself to the veranda. On the first bite, you discover the cookie is delicately perfumed with lemon that the crunchy sugar coating doesn’t dominate. The orange filling is so soft that it brings up tears from a spot inside your heart that you had forgotten existed. Helplessly you pray that your impetuous letter will be intercepted, but knowing better, you decide that tomorrow is the day in which you’ll make every attempt to take back the words that you no longer mean.
