The Finer Cookie:
Corn Meal and Olive Oil Biscotti
Meeting the Family

With so much newfound energy, you take on the challenge of rebuilding the fire damage to your photo studio. Despite all this difficulty, you feel 10 years younger and refreshed, so what should have been tedious now seems like an opportunity. Love has eluded you for so long, that you’ve forgotten the taste of it, the nourishment that intimacy brings, the excitement of getting to know another person. From this limitless vantage point, you consider the roots of your career: on-location photography.
With the turn of the seasons, your three older sisters planned a family dinner where they met your new lover for the first time, and for once, you’re confident they’d be accepting. No one shed a tear when an embolism darkened the life of your Ex and widowed you too. Since you and your siblings have all outlived each of your spouses, you are left very loyal and devoted to each other.
Carrying a basket lined with a fresh tea towel, your lover offered your sisters homegrown autumn carrots, beets and squash, as well as a bottle of Sauterne for after the meal. The sisters gathered around the basket and considered the thoughtfulness of such a gift. Smiles, embraces, and busy conversation occupied the evening in the kitchen and around the table.
Time languished before the Corn Meal and Olive Oil Biscotti were served—a winning combination in biscotti. Together they contributed a sweet quality and created a crunchy, sandy texture without being overly dry. They are notably different than the traditional biscotti, which would be denser, and harder to bite. Corn Meal and Olive Oil Biscotti, no doubt, accompanied the Sauterne which had been poured into small glasses. They were also easy to nibble on with the tea and coffee served to you on your favourite porch rocker. In the glowing moonlight, you both contemplated the energy you shared between you and felt happy together.
