The Finer Cookie: Browned Butter and Red Wine Brownies
By Kimberlie Robert
You wanted to open up your life a little more and extend an invitation for a weekend stay at your Adirondack Lodge. The Fall season could be either spectacularly good or bad, depending on your timing. If the days were sunny, you could take out one of the boats, or hike one of the high peaks. Sharing wheels, you approached your camp, and as the stones crackled under your tires, the sun beamed through the tall pines, which cast a glow onto the deep gables and covered porches of your craftsman style lakefront lodge—a lodge that was purchased very early in your career.
From within the high vaulted ceiling of the Great Room, while resting in front of simmering fire tucked into the wide open fireplace, the art of pleasure was cultivated. It was absorbed through your senses and transformed itself into good health and well being. It liberated, enhanced, gratified and inspired hope. In so far as pleasure is infinite, Alex served Browned Butter and Red Wine Brownies. They were a pleasure that could only be described, in the tantric traditions, as expansive and continuing. They defined and redefined your passion for chocolate, as they were deeply fudgy, bright, rich, and pleasurable from the nose to the lips, and back in the throat. Free flowing with richness and smoke, they embraced every pleasure known to us in the sentient world.
Pleasures like this make for good sleeping and in the morning, you both decide to climb the mountain that flanked the west side of the lake. The sky was a high blue, the light was evenly cast, and the earth was firm and dry. As all mountains in the Adirondacks are, they ascend very gently until the final scramble that is often steep and demanding. The bald summit rewarded you generously with 360 views of neighbouring peaks, lush forest, sparkling lakes and gaggles of geese that were just beginning their migration south.
On your descent, which is always slower, steeper and more difficult than the climb, the granite erratics spanned the width of the trail and gripped your Vibram soles. The deceitful layer of fallen leaves that appeared harmless, behaved like ball bearings, and that’s how it happened. Your lover, believing the footfalls to be secure, lost control and fell backward. The right wrist shattered, and the party of jays scattered and the forest fell silent, until the bellowing moaning of pain started to penetrate the open space.
