on September 27
Students local and worldwide are mobilizing for the upcoming Global Climate Strike
By Patricia Dumais
Montreal schools are giving students time-off on Friday, September 27… MEC stores are closing their doors until 5 pm that day… There are calls from multiple organisations urging people to go on strike… Everyone is talking about the Global Climate Strike!
Because there is no Plan(et) B
Millions of students worldwide have already walked out of classrooms demanding urgent action against climate change.
Some Montreal school boards and administrations are supporting the global call to action and moving to allow or even encourage students to miss class for the cause. Next Friday will be the first time in its 50-year history that Dawson College will cancel classes for a march to help slow climate change.
On September 27, the planet is on strike. Not just students, but also workers, citizens. Because the climate crisis spares nobody, we must all be mobilized…

The Global Climate Strike is timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit happening in New York from September 21 to 23. It’s partly inspired by 16-year-old Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg who will attend the Montreal rally on Friday. Strikers will gather at the Sir George-Étienne Cartier monument on Avenue du Parc at noon.

Thunberg has staged weekly demonstrations over the past year under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture and the website fridaysforfuture.org lists more than 100 climate strikes that are planned across Canada.
Climate Strike Canada organizers state on the event’s web site, “On September 27, the planet is on strike. Not just students, but also workers, citizens. Because the climate crisis spares nobody, we must all be mobilized. Let’s make this date a historic moment. The one of true change. Because it is high time we take matters into our own hands.”
Climate strike organizers hope that their initiatives will get the attention of federal leaders ahead of the October 21 election.
