Dear Secretary-General Guterres:

Green Coalition of Montreal, a non-partisan environmental organization of more than 80 groups here in Canada, wishes to thank you for repeatedly reminding the world in the last months of the pre-eminent importance of the global climate crisis. You are earnestly trying to bring climate change back to our attention.

We completely agree with your words of October 27, 2022: “Our world cannot afford any more greenwashing, fake movers or late movers. We must close the emissions gap before climate catastrophe closes in on us all.”

And you have just said: “We are in the fight of our lives. And we are losing.”

Your efforts to wake us up are exemplary and many concerned advocates, on all the continents, believe that you are absolutely right to raise the alarm now.

In Montreal itself, Green Coalition has played a key role in saving wet meadows to be part of a Great Western Park on this island, and we continue to press for a Great Eastern Park, too. We are also deeply involved in trying to conserve and preserve an integrated 215-hectare wetland ecosystem known as “Technoparc,” the last urban wetland of its kind here, just north of Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

With urgency, you are reminding us that the global truly is local.

When the COP 15 of the UN Convention on Biodiversity meets in Montreal itself in December, Green Coalition intends to speak just as forthrightly as you have about wetlands, about natural spaces, about the lives of people here and everywhere.

We are in a battle for life, and we must not lose.

Thank you General-Secretary for sounding the call, loud and clear, for us all.

Sincerely Yours,

Charlie Macleod, President
Board of Green Coalition
