5 ways to improve window
and door performance

Will you be able to warm your home this winter without going broke?

September 2, 2022

Everyone says inflation will come down soon, but what if it takes years? Will you be able to warm your home in winter without going into debt? It will be unbearable if you can’t keep it cool next summer.

You should start by improving the performance of your windows and doors, which will keep your energy bills down. It’s the quickest way to start saving money today. Let’s look at a few tasks you can look at right now.

1. Replace your old windows

Sometimes you’ll need to replace old windows instead of trying to fix them. If you speak to the Winnipeg office of Canadian Choice, they’ll give you a good quote. Can you see any moisture in your windows right now?

If you see water dripping between panes of glass, it means the seal in your window is damaged. The efficiency will drop considerably, which is terrible when trying to keep heat out. New windows come with fresh seals

2. Caulk windows and door

The caulk will last longer than your vinyl window warranty, so you’ll need to replace it yourself once it’s gone. You will also need to examine the caulk on your doors, which could be missing or full of cracks.

Spend a while practicing with the caulking gun, so it will look good once you’ve applied it. If you put on too much or too little, it will give you problems. Make sure you rub it in to stop water and air from getting inside.

3. Examine trim for damage

You can spend a while examining the trim on your windows and doors while applying caulk. Trim will end up damaged over time, which creates little openings. Simple things like falling branches can cause lots of damage.

It’s probably not something you want to fix yourself unless you have DIY experience. Luckily, you won’t need to spend lots of money on materials. It won’t cost a lot to repair, especially if you’re friends with a handyman.

4. Wash windows and doors

You probably have dirty windows and doors scattered around your home. Do you have windows on the roof of your home? It’s unlikely the window cleaner will stretch that far because they won’t want to fall off their ladder.

If you only use one door to enter and exit your home, you won’t spend lots of time cleaning the other one. Remove dirt and grime from every window and door you can find. Sunlight won’t get inside if the glass is unclean.

5. Check locks and handles

You should walk around checking the locks and handles on your windows and doors. If you can’t open the locks on your windows, you won’t be able to open them in summer. It will prevent you from letting fresh air inside.

If the handles on your doors are broken, you might not be able to open them. It won’t be expensive to replace any troublesome locks and handles. Check things like hinges and sliding mechanisms at the same time.

Get the most out of windows and doors

A huge percentage of your wages will go towards energy bills in the next few years, so you must ensure your windows and doors are performing at their best.
