Pause For Poetry:

Thoughts of Jerusalem
A poem by Michael Hawkes
This may not be Jerusalem,
This vipers’ pit, this world of men,
But it suffices to inspire
My dream of perfect love again.
Here! Take away my bow of gold
And take this chariot of fire,
But though it’s time for growing old
I need those arrows of desire.
They represent the love I hold
For all Earth’s beings that aspire,
For all the glories that unfold,
For all the beauty to admire.
I will not ever fire them off,
Quivered well, they’re carried near;
They pierced my heart and that’s enough
To keep me constant without fear.
