Wishes
A poem by Michael Hawkes
I wish I were as certain
In my being as a cat
When deciding not to be involved
Simply, just like that!
I wish I could be contented
Like a grass-fed Jersey cow,
With my head down
Munching mushrooms,
Oblivious somehow.
I’d like to be as faithful
As a well- trained collie dog,
Trusting that my loyalty
Will bring me close to God;
Or as rich in glow and glitter
As a full-grown butterfly
Fluttering ecstatically
Unaware the end is nigh;
Or any of His creatures
That isn’t “sapiens”,
That doesn’t suffer shamelessly
Or need to make amends.
