Tallis Scholars in Montreal
A polyphonic journey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the mystery of Christmas
November 11, 2025
On Saturday, December 13, 2025, Montreal will host the British vocal ensemble The Tallis Scholars for an exceptional concert at St. Andrew and St. Paul Church. Under the direction of their founder, Peter Phillips, the legendary singers will present a work titled Mother and Child – English Music for the Virgin Mary. Organized by Traquen’Art, a recognized figure on Montreal’s cultural scene, their visit marks a highlight of the musical season.
Presented during the heart of Advent, this concert promises a luminous and spiritual celebration of the mystery of the Nativity, showcasing a repertoire spanning five centuries of English sacred music—from the Renaissance to the contemporary era. It features works by Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Benjamin Britten, John Nesbett, John Taverner, and Matthew Martin. These compositions pay tribute to the iconic figure of the Virgin Mary, opening a profound exploration of themes such as motherhood, light, and sacred silence.

The event is part of a long-standing tradition in which music serves as a vehicle for spirituality and togetherness. During Advent, as the longing for light deepens, this evening will offer a suspended moment—a true interlude of peace and beauty amidst everyday life. The blend of styles, from pure Renaissance to contemporary sensibilities, reflects the richness and continuity of the English musical heritage.
