KoSA Music’s Magical Southern Italian Retreat

Experience Calabria’s musical legacy and immerse yourself in Italy’s rhythms, flavours, and soul

March 24, 2026

Have you ever wished you could visit Italy not as a tourist, but as a traveller—a participant in a living, breathing cultural adventure? This summer, KoSA Music invites you to do exactly that. The KoSA Italy Dream Retreat, an immersive week-long program set in the enchanting region of Calabria, offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience music, history, archaeology, and gastronomy at their source.

From July 13–20, 2026, discover a new kind of travel—one that lets you live, learn, and fall in love with the heart of Southern Italy.

This year marks the third edition of the Italy Dream Retreat, an experience carefully designed for a small group of travellers who want to connect deeply with local culture through music, food, and human connection. No experience is required, and participants of all ages are welcome. Whether you’re a lifelong musician or simply someone who has always wanted to explore rhythm, the KoSA experience invites you to participate, not just observe. You’ll play with professional artists, share meals with new friends, and take part in a creative exchange that transcends language.

The retreat unfolds in Catanzaro, Calabria’s charming capital, known as the City of the Two Seas. Nestled at the narrowest point of the Italian peninsula, Catanzaro looks east to the Ionian Sea and west to the Tyrrhenian, a geographical setting that mirrors the city’s dual spirit—ancient and modern, coastal and mountain, romantic and real. Participants stay in a refined, historic boutique hotel in the city centre, steps away from coffee bars, pasticcerias, and family-run trattorias. It’s the perfect home base for a week where each day blends creativity, learning, and leisure.

A KoSA retreat day begins with inspiration and ends with connection. All classes are held at the renowned Tchaikovsky Music Conservatory of Catanzaro, a short walk from the accommodations. Mornings are filled with music and movement; afternoons are for exploration, relaxation, or hands-on culinary adventures.

‘It’s not a tour. It’s a journey into the soul of southern Italy—through the universal language of rhythm.’

Experience Italy the KoSA Music Way

Music & Rhythm

Learn from renowned percussionists and local musicians as you explore the powerful pulse of Southern Italian traditions. Aldo Mazza shares his expertise through workshops rooted in Cuban, African, and Italian rhythmic connections, while distinguished guest artists lead sessions in frame drumming, jazz, and improvisation.

Cultural Discovery

Dive into southern Italy’s history and music folklore in an engaging presentation by Calabrian musician-scholar Danilo Gatto, who brings the local culture to life through storytelling and song.

Dance & Performance

Get on your feet with the mesmerizing steps of the tarantella and other regional dances, taught by dance masters Andrea Bressi and Raffaella Costa, to the accompaniment of traditional instruments such as the zampogna (Italian bagpipes) and the accordion.

Culinary Delights

Join top Calabrian chef Emanuele Plati for a hands-on cooking class that culminates in a feast of freshly made pasta and regional specialties. It’s an experience that blends sensory pleasure with cultural understanding—learning by tasting, laughing, and cooking together.

Evenings bring people together for spontaneous jam sessions, informal concerts, and good company. Local musicians, including the talented brothers Francesco and Giacomo Cerullo, join participants to share music in an atmosphere that feels more like family than performance.

The Magic of Live Collaboration

One of last year’s highlights came with a surprise guest appearance by acclaimed guitarist and composer Dave Howard, formerly of Berklee College in Boston, who now calls Italy home. Joined by saxophonist Sal Urzino and bassist Francesco Talotta, the trio performed an unforgettable in-house concert that turned into an all-out jam session—one that captured the spirit of KoSA itself: open, spontaneous, and deeply human.

Beyond the Classroom

KoSA’s Italy Dream Retreat isn’t confined to studios or classrooms—it extends into the landscape and history of Calabria itself. Throughout the week, participants enjoy guided excursions to the region’s stunning white-sand beaches, archaeological sites, and open-air concerts.

‘It’s an experience that changes the way you travel. You don’t just see Italy—you feel it, through its sound, movement, and taste.’

From exploring ancient ruins dating back to Magna Graecia to swimming in turquoise waters or sipping espresso in a medieval piazza, every activity is infused with the relaxed authenticity for which southern Italy is famous. Moments of leisure are balanced with moments of learning, all under the warm sun and generous spirit of Calabria.

A Journey for the Senses

The KoSA Italy Dream Retreat is far more than a vacation—it’s a journey that awakens every sense and rekindles the spirit of discovery. Each day unfolds like a symphony of sights, sounds, and sensations. You’ll hear the deep, earthy rhythms of the tamburello echo through sun-drenched courtyards, mingle the aroma of freshly pressed Calabrian olive oil with the warmth of local wine, and move in rhythm with the ancient pulse of southern folk dances. As you breathe in the sea air that drifts from the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts, it’s easy to understand why Calabria has inspired generations of poets, musicians, and dreamers.

Participants often leave with more than memories—they depart with a renewed sense of creativity, belonging, and inner rhythm. Many return year after year, drawn not only by the learning and artistry but by the spirit of community that blossoms among fellow travellers. Shared meals, spontaneous jam sessions, and sunlit conversations become moments of genuine connection, reminding everyone that music—and the emotion behind it—transcends language.

For those discovering rhythm for the first time, the retreat offers a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where self-expression feels effortless and authentic. For seasoned performers, it presents a rare chance to refine technique under the guidance of master musicians while exploring the cultural roots of Mediterranean rhythm, from the syncopated pulse of Africa to the soulful phrasing of Italian folk traditions. Here, growth and joy intertwine, creating a space where music becomes both teacher and companion.
