On June 12 at Pierre-Péladeau Centre, in collaboration with the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale (Alliance of shelters for women victims of domestic violence), the brilliant Maude Sabourin, principal dancer with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, presented a unique benefit performance that highlighted the exceptional talent of women choreographers. Muses wasn’t just a simple show; it was an explosion of emotions and movements in service of a critically important cause.
Having personally experienced domestic violence, Maude Sabourin transformed her lived experience into a powerful work of art. It was an honour to see her express herself with such authenticity through dance. She successfully rallied Montreal dance icons – Margie Gillis, Louise Lecavalier, Anne Plamondon, and Diana León – all inspirations who enthusiastically answered her call. Each delivered original, strikingly beautiful performances.

Beyond its artistic splendour, Muses brought to light a reality too often hidden: domestic violence, which accounts for over a quarter of crimes against individuals in Quebec, and the scourge of femicide. This grim truth was presented with dignity and strength, underscoring the isolation of victims and the difficulty they face in seeking help. This performance served as a beacon of hope in that darkness, emphasizing the importance of breaking the silence.
The artistic lineup was incredibly rich, with these great local creators once again showcasing their art. Singer-songwriter Ingrid St-Pierre elevated the event, adding a layer of pure emotion. And what a pleasant surprise to discover the promising work of four young graduates from the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, whose new creation was specially choreographed for this memorable evening!

All funds raised will be donated to the Regroupement, a gesture that will have a direct impact on supporting women. The fact that there aren’t enough shelter spaces and that many women wait months for external services is unacceptable. Muses is a powerful reminder of the need for increased support and collective awareness.
The evening was proof that dance can be a powerful vehicle for social change. Bravo to Maude Sabourin and all the artists involved for their courage, talent, and unwavering commitment!
