Sufie passion That Rises to Ecstasy
– New York Times
After nine years, the virtuosos of Sufi Qawwali will be back in Montreal on May 27 at 8 pm, at the Oscar Peterson Concert Hall on Concordia University’s Loyola Campus, 7141 Sherbrooke Street West.
Sufi Qawwali
This ensemble performs Qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional music with its origins in ancient Islamic poetry. Known as the way to the heart, Qawwali expresses the fervent devotion of the great Sufi mystics.
The music begins by drawing the audience in with a meditative rhythm of chants, melodies and percussion. Gradually, the rhythm builds, reaching ecstatic heights that transport musicians and listeners closer to the divine.
The ensemble’s musical roots go back 700 years to the tradition of Delhi’s Qawwal Bachon ka Gharana. Lead singers Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad, accompanied by their backing singers and percussionists, weave together devotional and secular traditions for a transcendent musical evening.
