Bringing the environment to the forefront of the election campaign

Despite Premier François Legault’s refusal to hold a leaders’ debate on environmental issues during the current election campaign, the citizens’ initiative VireAuVert decided to rely on citizen groups across the province to organize debates in their regions or ridings. The result: 17 debates across the province and 11 other groups who chose to interview candidates and post the interviews online.

Concerned citizens in Westmount-St. Louis have teamed up with environmental groups such as the Coalition for Green and Peaceful Neighbourhoods, the Green Coalition and the social enterprise Enuf, to organize an environmental debate to be held on September 20, 2022, at the St. Jax Centre, 1439 St. Catherine Street West, Montreal, starting at 7 pm.

Questions will focus on environmental issues in the riding, such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction, sustainable cities, climate risks and environmental education.

Four candidates in the riding have confirmed their attendance: incumbent Jennifer Maccarone (Liberal Party), Florence Racicot (Parti Québécois), David Touchette (Québec solidaire) and Sam Kühn (Green Party).

Questions will focus on environmental issues in the riding, such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste reduction, sustainable cities, climate risks and environmental education. Organizers have based their questions on the 48 environmental proposals sent to the government by VireAuVert, which can be found at vireauvert.org/propositions_environnementales

Voters are invited to forward these proposals to the candidates in their riding.
