Film Noir au Canal:
The Crime Film cult
Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity will open this 8th edition of the festival on July 14
July 10, 2024
Starting at 7:30 pm on Sunday, July 14, film enthusiasts are invited to come by foot, bicycle, car, or kayak to Saint-Patrick Square, at the corner of Wellington and St-Patrick streets, to attend the opening night of the Film Noir au Canal festival. This cult festival of crime films will launch its 8th edition on the banks of the Lachine Canal with a screening of DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944), a landmark of American cinema directed by Billy Wilder, in which actress Barbara Stanwyck delivers one of her greatest performances.
The event will begin with music by the Montreal Ukulele Club, followed by a presentation of the movie by Rafaël Ouellet, a Québécois filmmaker, cinematographer, producer, and editor, who has worked on over 150 musical concerts, music videos, television series, and short films. He has also directed several feature films including CAMION (2011), GUROV ET ANNA (2014), and ARSENAULT & FILS (2022).
The film Double Indemnity will be screened in its original English version with French subtitles. In this classic film noir, insurance agent Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) becomes entangled in a murderous scheme when he falls for the seductive Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck), who is determined to kill her abusive husband (Tom Powers) and cash in on the fraudulent life insurance claim.
For this 8th edition, the festival invites the public to participate in a support campaign. Until August 23, 2024, people can make an online donation of $10, $20, $50, or an amount of their choice. All funds raised will be invested in the organization and promotion of these mysterious film evenings. To participate in the campaign, visit bit.ly/FilmNoirAuCanal_Campagne2024
Hints about the upcoming program
During the summer of 2024, six free outdoor screenings will take place on Sundays from July 14 to August 18, and, true to tradition, a contemporary film will close this 8th edition of Film Noir au Canal on August 18.
Besides Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity opening the season on July 14, cinephiles will have the opportunity to discover a brilliant film by the French master of suspense (July 21), one of the most thrilling American B-movie film noirs (July 28), a screening paying tribute to an iconic 1940s Hollywood actress who would have turned 100 this year (August 4), and a courtroom drama that won the Palme d’Or (August 11).
Film Noir au Canal is presented thanks to the financial support of W. Maxwell Agendas, the Sud-Ouest Borough, and Caisse Desjardins du Sud-Ouest de Montréal.
