Classical music concerts
at Saint Joseph’s Oratory

The Orchestre classique de Montréal proposes a rich classical music experience in an exceptional venue

June 30, 2026

On Saturday, July 4, Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal will transform into a true house of music with Classical Day at the Oratory, a one-day, fully free festival presented by the Orchestre classique de Montréal (OCM). Designed for all ages, the event offers a friendly, gradual introduction to classical music through a series of mini‑concerts staged in some of the Oratory’s most beautiful spaces.

Classical Day at the Oratory has a clear goal: to democratize classical music by placing it at the heart of an iconic site many Montrealers already know for its architecture, gardens, and sweeping views of the city. From 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., visitors are invited to wander freely from one space to another, take in short 30‑minute concerts, pause for a piece, then continue their walk toward another venue and another musical atmosphere.

This event offers a gradual, welcoming immersion into classical music through a series of mini‑concerts staged in some of the sanctuary’s most beautiful spaces.

The spirit of the festival is distinctly inclusive: seasoned music lovers, newcomers, families with children, passing visitors and regulars of the Oratory all find an entry point that suits their curiosity and pace. The day will begin at 10 am. with an OCM string quartet at the main entrance of the Marcel‑Lalonde Pavilion, greeting visitors as they arrive with the warm colours of the string sound.

At 11 am., the ArtCrush project takes over on the Place de la Sainte‑Famille, bringing together a violinist, a dancer and a painter around the work Rizomes—a multidisciplinary moment that connects music, movement and visual art, ideal for capturing the attention of a wide audience. At noon, the Oratory’s carillon will be in the spotlight with a recital devoted to this unique instrument, whose bells mark the life of the sanctuary and give it a sound signature like no other.

The afternoon will be marked by a distinctly participatory and family‑friendly tone. At 2 pm. and 3 pm., Jeunesses Musicales will offer a Rhythm Circle on the terrace of the salle des pas perdus, an activity that lets young and old alike discover music through the body, pulse and play.
At 4 pm., the mood becomes more intimate again with a recital in the basilica’s choir featuring violinist Marc Djokic and pianist Matt Herskowitz. This kind of encounter highlights closeness to the performers and the space’s acoustics, with a repertoire designed to reach both expert ears and those discovering classical music for the first time.

At 5 pm., the Garden of the Way of the Cross will host the Petites Étoiles recital, shining a light on young talents in a green, contemplative setting, and at 6 pm., the Place de la Sainte‑Famille takes on a jazzier feel with the duo led by Bogdan Gumenyuk near the carillon, creating a smooth transition between the classical world and other musical languages.

In the early evening, the basilica terrace becomes the focal point of the day. At 7 pm., an OCM string quartet will be joined by dancers from Corazón de Tango for a program in which music and dance respond to one another, in a dialogue between classical tradition and the spirit of tango.

Finally, at 8:30 pm., the OCM string octet will offer a sunset concert on the basilica terrace. This closing moment, at the crossroads of urban landscape, religious heritage and the string repertoire, encapsulates the festival’s ambition: to make classical music a sensitive, accessible and memorable experience rather than a gathering reserved only for insiders. In case of rain, all programming will be moved indoors at the Oratory, ensuring the event goes ahead regardless of the weather.

The OCM: a historic orchestra focused on inclusion

Winner of a Juno Award in 2024, the Orchestre classique de Montréal is the oldest chamber orchestra in Canada, founded in 1939 by violinist, conductor and composer Alexander Brott and cellist and administrator Lotte Brott. For many years, the OCM was led by conductor Boris Brott until his passing in 2022; today, it is under the artistic direction of Andrei Feher, a young Canadian‑Romanian conductor who continues to champion the classical repertoire while opening it up to new collaborations and more flexible formats.

‘In case of rain, all programming will be moved indoors at the Oratory, ensuring the event goes ahead regardless of the weather.’

In residence at Salle Pierre‑Mercure, the orchestra is known for its ability to perform both major works of the canon and more eclectic programs, as well as for a mission explicitly centred on diversity and inclusiveness. In this spirit, the OCM runs the Musique pour tous program, designed to work with newcomer communities and Montreal organizations to make its concerts accessible to a wider audience. Classical Day at the Oratory fits naturally within this approach, bringing classical music out of the traditional concert hall and into a well‑loved heritage site, rich in history and symbolism.

String concerts in Montreal parks this August

The OCM’s summer programming doesn’t end at the Oratory. In August, the orchestra will go out to meet residents in three Montreal parks as part of the Campbell Concerts series, presented by the City of Montreal. Under the baton of Andrei Feher, the program L’élan des cordes will offer a journey through the richness and expressiveness of the string ensemble, with a lineup that includes the overture to Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus (in a string arrangement), Leo Weiner’s Divertimento No. 1, Karen Sunabacka’s Born by the River and Tchaikovsky’s famous Serenade for Strings.

These open‑air concerts, in a very different urban context, extend the same desire to bring classical music closer to Montrealers’ everyday lives. The dates are:

  • Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 7:30 pm., Parc Lucie‑Bruneau
  • Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 7 pm., Parc Georges‑Saint‑Pierre
  • Friday, August 14, 2026, at 7 pm., Parc Ahuntsic

Classical Day at the Oratory is an ideal opportunity to rediscover a landmark Montreal site through the lens of music while enjoying a free, accessible program. Whether you come for a single mini‑concert, a musical stroll with the family or the sunset octet, the event offers a rare way to combine culture, heritage and the pleasure of wandering on Mount Royal in the height of summer.
